Saturday Morning Odds & Ends

Wow. It's been a few days since we did some hard core blogging. Last time we did, we were ahead 3 games to 1 in the World Series and Our Ace, Cole Hamels, was pitching.

And we were petrified. Lose game five and it's back to Crap Hole Field with no Cole.

The the rain came. Then Idiot Bud changed the rules in the middle of the World Series. How in hell do you change the rules in the MIDDLE of the World Series?!? Yet, he did, telling no one (until after the fact) that he had pre-determined the game would NOT end with a rain shortened outcome.

Alas, it all ended well. Nothing better than a tidy 3 inning "game" to win your first World Series in 28 years. We were in the 7th grade when Tug McGraw struck out Willie Wilson for the final out. And now at the age of 40, seeing Brad Lidge strike out Eric Hinske was just as sweet.

We are happiest for Pat Burrell, Chase Utley and Uncle Charlie.

In a weird way, Pat the Bat has always kind of been our Favorite Player. Much of that has to do with the fact that over the years, when he did well, the team almost always won. So we cheered the hardest for him because the team's success depended largely on his production. More than that, however, he always seemed to give his best. Even when he battled a year-and-a-half-slump, he always tried hard and never bitched or made excuses. (Facts not lost on the notoriously fickle Phillies fans, who seldom, if ever, booed the man during his struggle.) Utley gets our nod because he proved that you can win a game with your glove. His fake-to-first and then throw home to nail Jason Bartlett in the 7th inning of a tie game perhaps saved the game and series for his team. (Oh, yeah, his opening game dinger set the tone for the Phillies, putting them up one game to none.) And what can we say about Uncle Charlie?!? Prior to this, he was most remembered in Philadelphia for his lockerroom altercation with The King, WIP sports radio personality Howard Eskin. But then Uncle Charlie's mom passed away during the playoffs and everyone saw what a down-to-earth-humble guy he was. The smartest guy on the block? Of course not. A good baseball lifer smart enough to surround himself with Jimy Williams and Davey Lopes? You got it.

Anyway, now that we have The Title, it will be nice:

1. To get back our stress free evenings.

2. To go to bed at our normal time of...wait for it...9 PM.

3. To get back to working out on a regular basis at 5 AM every morning. (Several mornings following late night playoff games led to the inevitable snooze button.)

Moving on to other things...

The Playmaker

Last week's soccer game was a disappointing 6-4 loss, that saw The Playmaker prove to be merely mortal -- netting just one goal. This morning, however, team 708 avenged its first loss of the season with an exciting 5-2 victory. The Playmaker scored 2 goals and had the game winning assist on a pass from mid field. Today marked the end of the season (next week is an intersquad game). Team 708 ended up in first place with a 6-2 record. Congrats.

This past week in football was eventful. Tuesday night, Your Flag Football Packers lost to the Cardinals, 18-15. The Playmaker had three catches. One was a 2-point conversion. Another was a third down 40 yard Hail Mary TD. The pass easily traveled 20 yards in the air where The Playmaker snatched it and ran the remaining 20 yards to The House. Thursday night, the Packers rebounded by beating the Lions, 25-19. The Playmaker had two catches. His first yielded another 40 yard catch-and-run TD. (YAC equaled 32 yards, easily.) His other one was a 38 yard catch, before being "tackled" on the two yard line. From there, we politely ended the game, forgoing an easy score with under one minute to play. For the season, we are 8-3 and in first place.

Today's College Football Games

Texas at Texas Tech -- We love Mike Leach. (Check out his dating tips on YouTube.) But we can't see him stopping the Texas offense. He loses, 42-34.

Georgia & Florida -- The Gators roll up on the Dawgs, 30-17.

Enjoy the games!
