Saturday Afternoon 3-Pack

1. How funny would it have been in Navy had scored on its final possession to defeat Notre Dame?!? As funny as it would have been to see Irish coach Charlie Weis get fired right there on the field. We were the first ones to speculate on how much trouble Weis is in. After today's 27-21 win against Navy that felt like a loss, the Irish are now 6-4. They play Syracuse next week, which will put them at 7-4. They end the season on the road against USC. If Southern Cal puts a 50-10 beat-down on him, Weis will probably get canned. As long as they lose respectfully, Weis will be back next year. He was part of Bill Belichick's staff that replaced Pete Carroll in New England back in 1999. Will Coach Pete be looking to help show Weis the unemployment line?!?

2. A month from now, we will be clamoring for college football games. Having said that, today's slate of games is downright uninspiring. Want proof? Look at the nationally televised games. ABC's 3:30 game on right now is...wait for it...North Carolina at Maryland. Wow. Gotta finish quickly and (not) go watch that one. CBS counters with South Carolina and The Head Ball Coach going to Florida. If nothing else, it will be fun to watch Spurrier have fits on the sideline while his team gets crushed. Tonight, ESPN's prime time game is, gulp, Mississippi State at Alabama. Yawn. ABC's prime time game is Boston College at Florida State. Why those two mediocre teams are anywhere near a national broadcast is beyond us.

3. Over to college hoops. There were quiet whispers last winter that Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie was "not a good fit" for Wildcat Nation. Said Nation must be screaming after last night's loss to VMI. That's right -- VMI (as in the Virginia Military Institute) went INTO RUPP ARENA and smoked Kentucky, 111-103.
